PHOENIX Meets the Demand for Dressings and Sauces

PHOENIX Meets the Demand for Dressings and Sauces

The dressing, sauces, and condiments shelf has been getting a lot of attention in recent years. With a greater emphasis on healthier options, customers are moving away from traditional mayonnaise-based dips and sauces and looking for health-conscious products. According to a recent study, this $30 billion industry is seeing an increase in demand for Latin and Asian flavors, which typically use less dairy and are lower in fat. Additionally, more traditional condiments are placing a greater emphasis on using beneficial ingredients. Recent launches of licensed brands from restaurants and celebrity chefs are also disrupting the market standard.[1] Brands hope to engage customers by standing out on the shelf through unique branding and packaging.

For many years, PHOENIX has offered closures for all varieties of dressings and sauces, from wide-mouth jars with continuous thread closures to traditional dressing bottles with deep-skirted 38mm plastic closures. Over the last several years, we have expanded to include both single-wall and double-wall dispensing closures, providing a more comprehensive offering to this retail shelf.

us sauces dressing condiments chartPHOENIX has been conducting packaging research through customer interviews, focus groups, and retail audits. One of the greatest challenges for closures in the dressings and sauces market is recyclability, particularly for dispensing closures. The majority of condiments in the shelf space use a silicone valve to regulate dispensing. This creates a significant barrier to recycling because it turns a recyclable cap into landfill trash due to a small rubber valve. As a result, developing a mono-material closure has been our priority to combat the recyclability challenges. By excluding a silicone valve, PHOENIX Mesa® Dispensing Closures, made of polypropylene, are more easily recyclable while still providing excellent dispensing control without leaving a messy residue on the closure after use.

During PHOENIX-conducted focus groups, participants tested dispensing various viscosities with a variety of plastic closures. Participants tested both ketchup and mayonnaise by tracing a pattern dispensing from several different style plastic caps and provided feedback on their experiences.

Participants found that the PHOENIX closure was easiest to control and provided comparable stoppage in product flow, effectively pulling the product back into the bottle.

The dressings, sauces, and condiments industry is well-established, however, demand for healthier and licensed options are revolutionizing the shelf. Differentiating products is one of the most important factors in maintaining market share. Not only does the product itself drive sales, but the packaging plays a key role as well.

PHOENIX continues to develop new technologies for this market that allow excellent performance in dispensing, while keeping sustainability top of mind. Be on the lookout for the next PHOENIX innovation at retail on your favorite condiment.
